ATP and adenosine are purines that play dual roles in cell metabolism and neuronal
signaling. Acting at the A1 receptor (A1R) subtype, adenosine acts directly on neurons to
inhibit excitability and is a powerful endogenous neuroprotective and anticonvulsant
